PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Museums of Mississauga & Small Arms Centre for Arts, Heritage and Innovation 

 

​Reporting to the Director, Culture Division, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a strong curatorial vision focused on Mississauga's unique stories. The Manager will advance the mandate of the reanimated Mississauga's Museums and the newly acquired Small Arms Centre for Arts, Heritage and Innovation.  In this role, the Manager will lead a team of professionals responsible for the operation and programming of these facilities and will act as a 'champion' of Living Heritage.  As a key member of the divisional leadership team, the Manager also plays a role in helping to set strategic direction, policy, continuous improvement and innovation that drive successful cultural development within the City of Mississauga.  Specifically, the Manager will be responsible for:

 

Strategic & Operational Planning

  • Establish a strong vision and mission for the service area;
  • Develop strategic and operational plans for museum service and all lines of business;
  • Oversee the collection, compilation and dissemination of unit activity information. 

Programming

  • Assess and identify community needs, opportunities for educational programming and audience development;
  • Ensure effective design and delivery of all programs, projects, exhibitions and partnerships;
  • Guide professional curatorial and programming staff in conceiving, developing and implementing innovative programs, outreach and engagement experiences.

Asset Management

  • Oversee acquisition, preservation efforts and effectiveness assessments.

Networking/Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with the Museums of Mississauga Advisory Committee and Friends of the Museum to support their mandates and maintain effective and positive engagement;
  • Liaise with senior management and Council;
  • Promote, encourage and develop joint-activities between the City and other institutions including the ROM, AGO, AGM, PAMA and other relevant heritage agencies and organizations.
  • Engage and work collaboratively with Mississauga's Indigenous community and cultural community groups to promote equity, diversity and inclusion.

Administration

  • Develop annual work plan and report regularly on progress;
  • Prepare corporate reports, recommendations and updates for the Director and Commissioner on various topics or issues as required.

Budget/Business Planning

  • Develop annual work plan and report regularly on progress;

Human Resource Management

  • Administer the recruitment, training, staff development and performance management process for all direct reports and ensure that evaluations are carried out for all staff;
  • Counsel, motivate , foster and maintain a positive work culture with both the full and part time staff teams.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Arts Administration, Heritage, Public Administration, Social Sciences or a related discipline;
  • Minimum 5 years progressive experience working in a management capacity (municipal experience would be considered an asset);
  • Previous experience managing museums, major art galleries or multidisciplinary arts centres;
  • A track record of successfully building audiences and delivering innovative and creative programming and exhibits;
  • Strong leadership skills with a track-record of energizing, motivating and inspiring professional team to meet their full potential;
  • A history of developing and successfully executing creative long range plans and strategies;
  • Strong knowledge of the arts, heritage and culture sectors; 
  • Demonstrated superior judgment, and decision making skills, strong supervisory, leadership and team building abilities required; 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills required and an ability to liaise effectively with the public, elected officials and outside agencies;
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills;
  • Previous experience working with boards, community advisory groups or stakeholder governance models
  • Strong political acuity and judgement; 
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills;
  • A demonstrated ability to work successfully and respectfully with people from all cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, exceptional organizational and administrative skills, a collaborative working style, and a demonstrated knowledge of and passion for the arts, heritage (both social and physical) and history

 

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

Salary: $83,471 - $111,297
