Job Description




The City of Mississauga requires a UX Designer to join our Digital Team. The successful applicant will play a pivotal role in the City’s website modernization initiative by designing elegant user-centred websites and online applications that deliver value for citizens.



About You


As a Digital Team UX Designer you understand how to apply your visual design skills to deliver simple, accessible digital experiences that look great and are easy to use. You’re an advocate of exceptional design, who can elevate ideas and interactions with elegant and thoughtfully creative solutions. You are very detail oriented, comfortable working on large-scale projects, and passionate about making things easier for customers. You have the ability to clearly communicate customer experiences and design concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You enjoy team collaboration and can work in an agile environment, with people who value helping each other learn new things.


Primary Responsibilities


Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Marketing and as a member of the Digital Team, you will be responsible for designing websites in collaboration with developers, content writers, and other designers. You will translate user requirements into simple, elegant digital solutions that put the customer first. You will also contribute to defining and communicating style standards throughout the organization. Specifically, you will:

  • Create original designs, and/or modify existing designs for responsive websites on a wide range of devices and interfaces.
  • Facilitate meetings, present solutions, communicate and defend your designs with evidence.
  • Communicate the intended user-experience with research, user stories, wireframes, storyboards, taxonomies, sketches, prototypes, and mock-ups.
  • Learn from feedback and refine your work to meet the needs of business and end users.
  • Build interactive prototypes that simulate the real system or site's functionality and design details.
  • Create GUIs, layouts, templates, landing pages, navigation, and any necessary design artifacts to maximize simplicity, style, and usability.
  • Apply rigorous detail to finalize styles and design details to create high-fidelity digital products that are ready for release to customers.
  • Create cohesive style guides that adhere to our brand, and ensure that a consistent design language is applied across the City’s digital experience, maintaining consistency in visual elements and defining the expected customer behavior.
  • Evaluate existing websites to identify potential usability and accessibility issues and areas in need of improvement


Job Specifications


  • University or College graduate in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, UX, or related discipline or proven work experience as a UX Designer or similar role.

  • Expert level abilities with design and UX software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe XD, Sketch, and InVision.
  • 3 or more years of UX design experience in a professional setting.
  • Portfolio of responsive web design projects, including end product and processes.
  • A great understanding of user-centered design, user testing methodologies, usability, and accessibility standards and practices (WCAG 2.0).
  • Ability to learn and grow with teammates in a highly collaborative and open environment.
  • Passionate about Design, UX, and making things easier for customers.
  • Strong understanding of designing systems built on HTML, CSS, Javascript and frameworks such as Bootstrap.
  • Experience working on an Agile team is an asset.
  • Experience working with a UI Style Guide or Pattern Library is an asset.



Note:  This is a contract position for up to 1 year

Hours of Work: 35 hour per week

Salary: $ 37.04 - $ 49.39  hourly
