Co-ordinate the operation and maintenance of the Traffic Control System



Here's what you get to do:


​Under the direction of the Supervisor, Traffic Systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems, the successful candidate will co-ordinate the operation and maintenance of the Traffic Control System, including traffic signal timing plans, traffic signal communications, and Intelligent Transportation Systems to ensure safe traffic signal operation within the City of Mississauga.  The position is responsible for the following:

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate response to requests for system information based on sound technical judgement.
  • Administer and coordinate the Traffic System Maintenance Service Agreement and prepare budget adherence.
  • Direct and monitor contractors to maintain intersection operation and communications.
  • Install, test and evaluate software to ensure compatibility with the Advanced Transportation Management System.
  • Liaise with the City's IT Department to ensure compatibility with the operation of traffic signals.
  • Oversee the annual arterial review program to ensure standards are maintained.
  • Attend Capital Works road reconstruction projects with respect to the impacts to the operation of traffic signals.
  • Review and provide comments regarding proposed developments with respect to the impacts to the operation of traffic signals.
  • Ensure that purchases of equipment and services are within budget and in accordance with City policies and guidelines.
  • Attend public meetings and committee meetings as required.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders including elected officials in regards to traffic signal operation matters.
  • Attend hearing of discovery and court litigation and providing evidence as a subject matter expert as required.
  • Prepare Corporate reports and responses for Mayor, Councillors, internal and external clients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.


Here's what you bring to the table:

Traffic System Coordinator

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Traffic Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Certification with OACETT as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 8 years related experience in municipal Traffic Engineering practices involving traffic signals and systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS), Communication Systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems and Traffic Signal Control Systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable Acts, By-laws, regulations and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Ontario Traffic Manuals, International Municipal Signal Association Standards, etc.
  • Solid contract management skills to administer and coordinate the Traffic System Maintenance Service Agreement.
  • Knowledge of contract management procedures including assist in budget preparation for procurement of equipment relating to the ATMS, evaluate equipment to ensure the City's traffic management requirements are met and assist with the evaluation and execution of future ATMS large scale projects.  
  • Understanding of basic financial and budget monitoring functions including demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential to provide functional guidance to technical and inspection staff.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to determine an effective course of action.
  • Solid interpersonal and communication abilities to deal effectively with staff, elected officials, contractors, external agencies and the public.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple competing tasks.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with the flexibility to adapt to the team's priorities.
  • Computer proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office and relevant software applications.
  • A valid Ontario Class 'G' driver's license and availability of personal vehicle.




Hours of Work: 35 hours per week

Salary: $76,737 - $102,317
