Job Responsibilities:


 Reporting to the Manager of Health and Safety, the successful candidate will provide health and safety related services to the Transportation and Works and other Corporate Services Departments

  • Act as an advisor/consultant to the departmental Joint Health and Safety Committees
  • Ensure clients are informed of recommended improvements/modifications relating to maintaining a safe workplace as per MOL requirements
  • Maintain Health and Safety Metrics including Incident/Accident frequency and severity and training on a regular basis
  • Work in conjunction with the other departmental Health and Safety Specialists to develop and recommend safety protocols and procedures
  • Develop and deliver safety training and awareness materials and programs
  • Provide supervisor support in conducting employee safety related investigations
  • Conduct or assist in conducting hazard recognition/mitigation assessments
  • Ensure proper documentation and review of Manager/Supervisor recommendations for each industrial accident or incident report received
  • Participate in Ministry of Labour Inspections and provide assistance with Order compliance as applicable
  • To promote and sustain the Corporate Occupational Health and Safety managed system and associated programs, policies and procedures
  • To provide advice to all levels of staff including the Senior Management Team relative to workplace safety issues and obligations
  • To oversee the functions of the Multi-site Joint Health & Safety Committee and act as the Ex-officio. 
  • To oversee workplace inspection program including conducting inspections as required to ensure safe operating conditions and make recommendations for corrective action where necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned


 Job Specifications: 

  • Post-Secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) Designation
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) would be considered an asset
  • Minimum (5) five years progressive experience related to employee and workplace safety (hazard recognition/assessment and mitigation, accident investigation, safety rules and regulations, and equipment operations).
  • Strong project management skills  
  • Experience in writing and implementing specific work procedures and conducting customized training programs in a unionized and non-union environment
  • Experience in a consulting/advisory role to a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC)  
  • Experience in the investigation of alleged violations of policies and procedures
  • Experience in the development and implementation of a Health and Safety Management System
  • Computer literacy in MS Office including; Excel, Word , Outlook, PowerPoint and SAP programs
  • Ability to anticipate, recognize and respond to problem situations
  • Demonstrated  tact and diplomacy skills and the ability to handle confidential matters with discretion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, especially strong writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Valid driver's license, with an acceptable driving record and use of a reliable vehicle



Hours of Work: 35 hour per week

Salary: 76,737 - $102,317
