Employment Period May 7, 2018 up to Friday, August 31, 2018, based on a 40 hour work week, and includes evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work. 


Job Specification:

Summer student positions are responsible for various duties related to the maintenance and operation of City owned parkland.

  • Previous experience working outdoors and dealing with customers is preferred.
  • Formal education in landscaping or horticulture would is considered an asset
  • All applicants must be available to work the entire duration of the term, 40 hours per week, including evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work. Will be assigned alternate duties, shifts or locations based on operational needs.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Driver's License Class "G2" with a minimum of three years of experience, with a driving record that meets City Standards. (proof will be required at time of interview); Ontario Driver’s License Class "G" is preferred.
  • Must hold Emergency First Aid Certification (proof will required at the time of the interviewAbility to work in varying climate conditions.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
  • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved safety boots, 6”-8” to cover ankle made of suede or leather material.

Primary Responsilbillities:

The successful incumbent may be assigned to any of the following responsibilities:  

  • Turf maintenance: including mowing, trimming, aeration, fertilization activities;
  • Horticultural maintenance : including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays;
  • Litter picking and planned garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parks;
  • Sports field maintenance including lining, gilling, turf cutting, and various amenity repairs to sports fields;
  • Cemetery operations including horticulture and turf maintenance and assistance with internments.
  • Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters.
  • Participate in the delivery, set up, takedown, clean-up and support for community and special events.
  • Operate various hand tools and powered equipment, including a pickup truck (minimum ¾ ton truck)
  • Other duties as assigned.


Successful applicants will be expected to complete responsibilities that meet the operational needs of the business units, which will require:

  • Working various shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work.
  • Flexibility over the course of the work term as staff can be re-deployed to various locations, shifts and/or assigned a variety of job responsibilities on a day-to-day basis.


Physical Demands: 

  • Working outdoors during all weather conditions between May and September
  • Exposure to vibration, unpleasant smells, fumes, dust, and flying particles
  • Exposure to grass, weeds, trees and other outdoor allergens, animal feces and various insects
  • Requires bending, lifting heavy equipment and objects (up to 55 lbs), climbing, walking, pushing, sitting, standing and repetitive motion

Successful applicants will be required to attend various training sessions throughout the season.


Employment offer is conditional upon providing a Criminal Records Search, at your own expense, that is acceptable to the City of Mississauga or a Record of Offences Declaration for returning staff where a Criminal Record Search acceptable to the City has previously been submitted.
