Primary Responsibilities:

Under the general direction of the Surveys and Inspections Supervisor, the incumbent:

  • Inspects and reports on site conditions, labour, workmanship and materials involved in the provision of municipal services by parties under a contract or agreement with the City in the Development Construction, Capital Works, Traffic, Maintenance Contracts, Works Operations, and Technical Services Sections; 
  • Ensures adequate control is maintained on the quantity and quality of labour and materials used in the construction and maintenance of municipal services to the City's standards;
  • Verifies measurements of utilities, as directed; advises the engineer on deficient items and follows‑up on directions to ensure deficiencies are properly corrected;
  • Examines plans, drawings, and site layouts;
  • Co‑ordinates materials testing;
  • Maintains records of all assigned projects regarding labour, equipment, materials; prepare progress payments, and other projects specific documentation as required.
  • Ensures acceptable progression of all assigned projects and prepares reports in connection with same;
  • Inspects construction sites to ensure that safe working conditions are maintained;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned which may include temporary re‑assignment to the Works Operations Section during the winter period to assist in winter maintenance activities.


Job Specifications:

  • Successful completion in a Civil Engineering Program from College or University.
  • Tech or C.E.T designation is preferred.
  • Previous experience in Municipal Services Construction is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including MS Office: Word, Excel;
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to create effective solutions to problems;
  • Good time management and organizational skills to be able to adapt to varying and tight deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills along with strong customer service and conflict resolution skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement and sound decisions;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbal and written, with previous experience in preparing reports.
  • Ability to carry out the full range of physical demands of the position such as lifting, pulling and carrying of heavy equipment and objects etc.;
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety Act, Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Book 7;
  • Must hold a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence and a driving record acceptable to the City. May be required to use your own vehicle in which mileage would be paid. A driver’s abstract will be required to verify a driving record in good standing.


Physical Demands:

  • Exposure to variety of weather conditions, noise, vibration, and unpleasant smells etc.
  • Exposure to concrete, asphalt, dust, flying particles etc.
  • Requires lifting, pulling and carrying of heavy equipment and objects.



Contract up to 8 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm. This position may require shift work, seasonal over-time, and weekends.

Salary: $25.55/hr
