Primary Responsibilities:

Under the general direction of the Area Supervisor or designate, this position is responsible for but not limited to, a variety of labouring duties related to the maintenance and operational activities of the Works Division: 

  • Cleans and maintains sidewalks, streets, roads and public grounds of municipality and other areas, working as member of crew;
  • Sweeps debris from streets, sidewalks, building grounds and other areas, and load debris into carts or trucks;
  • Mixes, pours and spreads materials such as concrete and asphalt;
  • Assists heavy equipment operators to secure special attachments to equipment, signal operators to guide them in moving equipment and provide assistance in other activities as required;
  • Digs ditches and trenches using shovels and other hand tools;
  • Operates power trimmers to cut brush and grass along roadsides and walkways;
  • Loads and unloads trucks with supplies and equipment, and move materials to work areas;
  • Collects and loads refuse on to trucks;
  • Assists equipment operators to secure attachments to equipment or trucks;
  • Assists in routine maintenance and repair of equipment;
  • Operates City vehicles and machinery as required;
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned e.g. Road Patrol.   

 Job Specifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent;
  • Experience using sod cutter, tamper, roller, sidewalk grinder, concrete saw, hand compactor, power asphalt compactor or other power tools an asset;
  • Previous experience/knowledge related to the construction industry is preferred;
  • Previous experience in the public sector is preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work in a team environment be self-motivated and cooperative;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a commitment to strong customer service and conflict resolution;
  • Availability and dependability to work shifts and overtime is an asset;
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety Act is an asset;
  • Must hold a valid class “G” License with a driving record in good standing and acceptable to the City. A Driver’s Abstract will be required. DZ License is considered an asset.
  • Ability to carry out the full range of physical demands of the position.


Physical Demands:

  • Exposure to variety of weather conditions, noise, vibration, unpleasant smells etc.
  • Exposure to concrete, asphalt, dust, flying particles etc.
  • Requires lifting, pulling and carrying of heavy equipment and objects 
  • C.S.A approved green patch safety boots will be required for the position. 


Note:  This is a contract up to 6 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, Normal working shift/days - 7:30 am to 4:00pm with an unpaid half hour for lunch

Hourly Rate: $20.33 as per Collective Agreement Local CUPE 66
