City Planning Strategies Division is the City’s catalyst for innovative planning strategies and strategic city building initiatives.  Our work is a critical; it ensures the City’s strategic change agenda is executed and is in aligned with Council’s strategy and community aspirations.  Collectively, our work shapes and influences the City’s cultural vibrancy, economic prosperity, social well-being, environmental resiliency, built form, and overall financial sustainability.  

City planning is one of the most important services within the municipal context and the field is ever evolving. Growing intensification pressures requires greater planning at a more local or neighbourhood level to manage this change.  The City’s nodes and corridors, as well as higher order transit stations, aging commercial sites and brownfield sites require detailed land use reviews. Amendments to the plan, and zoning by-law, detailed studies such as tertiary or block plans, parking strategies or community improvement plans, will be required to manage the change anticipated in the City of Mississauga over the years to come.

The Data + Visualization Studio section has been established to create, maintain, model, analyze and present GIS data that informs: the official plan, the growth forecast, development charges bylaw, vision/master plans, local area plans.  Beyond these, the section supports the Department in OMB/tribunal evidence preparation, business planning, urban design, communications, public engagements, open data, and more. The Studio is responsible for GIS data management, GIS data analysis, infographics, open data, 3D visualization, storytelling, visuals and the Planning and Building (P&B) website.


Here is what you get to do:

Under the direction of the Manager, Data + Visualization Studio; develops and maintains statistical databases, prepares population and employment projections and statistical reports, conducts and advises on statistical tests, designs and conducts surveys, and responds to requests for information. Extensive computer and software use including databases, spreadsheets, publishing, presentation, office and geographical information systems software is required.

  • Develops and maintains databases relative to housing, population, employment, industrial and commercial activity.
  • Key responsibility to generate the statistical modelling development of the City’s next Growth Forecast
  • Receives and responds to inquiries and information requests.
  • Identifies deficiencies in existing data bases and recommends and conducts remedial actions.
  • Acts as a resource person to provide guidance and direction to department staff regarding statistical methods. Perform statistical tests in support of planning studies.
  • Designs and conducts surveys.
  • Prepares statistical reports and information.
  • Prepares systems for the annual population and employment projections.
  • Liaise with other departments and agencies regarding the data base and for the coordination of upgrades to the data base.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Here is what you need to have:

  • University degree in urban and regional planning, geography, statistics or similar field is required along with minimum three (3) years related experience or combination of experience and education.  Suitable candidate will have practical knowledge of statistical concepts, a proven up to date survey and statistical data management background and demonstrated experience in models development. 
  • Experience in the preparation of population and employment projections (i.e. growth forecasts), statistical reports, statistical tests; experience designing and conducting surveys. 
  • Excellent project management and process analysis skills; proficiency in the use of database software, geographical information systems software and demonstrated commitment to excellence in data management is expected. 
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS is required. 
  • Professional certification in urban planning, geomatics, or related field is an asset.


Note:  This is a contract up to 2 years

Hours of Work: 35 hour per week

Salary: $37.04 - $49.39
