​Reporting to the City Solicitor, and a member of the Legal Services Management Team, the Deputy City Solicitor will manage and provide direction to the lawyers, legal assistants, legal clerks in the Planning Development and Real Estate Section.  The Deputy City Solicitor will  provide legal advice and services to the Corporation in planning and development issues including brownfield development; to represent the Corporation or direct counsel at hearings before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and other tribunals; attend Planning and Development Committee meetings; overseeing and directing the work of the City's planning, development, environmental and real estate counsel.

  • Responsible for full caseload including providing legal representation and advice on advanced legal matters in real estate, planning and development areas of law
  • Provides supervision and guidance and mentoring to the lawyers, law clerks and legal assistants within the Section; develops and empowers staff
  • Responsible for recruitment, staff evaluations through performance reviews for all staff in the section,
  • Responsible to ensure efficient and effective distribution of caseload to lawyers within the section
  • Provides professional consultation, including drafting reports to Council and its Committees
  • Attends public meetings to present the City's position / actions to the public, media and/or outside government bodies
  • Monitors the operations and projects within the section to ensure value added services to clients
  • Assists with the negotiation and selection/ use of external counsel as required
  • Promotes teamwork and integration between sections within the Legal Services Division and across the Corporation
  • Participates in strategic planning and direction of the Division and across the Corporation
  • Provides strategic advice on planning and development legal issues and works closely with planning staff in other departments on these matters
  • Acts as first point of contact regarding issues related to the section and assumes responsibility for other matters delegated by the City Solicitor


  • Post-graduate university degree in law (LLB or JD) and member in good standing of the Ontario Bar. 
  • Experience managing  and directing staff along with a  minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in  planning and development law, with experience in conducting hearings before tribunals including the Ontario Municipal Board
  • Experience drafting, negotiating, structuring and advising on various types of agreements relating to planning and development matters including brownfield sites. 
  • Highly developed organizational, analytical, research and business planning skills; effective leadership, facilitation, interpersonal skills
  • Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to effectively provide advice and direction to interested parties as necessary
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of statutes, regulations and by-laws affecting the City of Mississauga
  • excellent presentation skills, and be able to work under tight deadlines and to mentor staff of lawyers. Municipal government experience is an asset


Hours of Work: 35 hour per week

Salary: $ $129.967 - $173,288
